The Portfolio Overview is your window into the world of profitability, margin, rate realization, and performance to budget, all broken down by project. Project and delivery managers can use this dashboard to quickly spot projects that are not running according to plan or performing as well as their peers. This dashboard can be filtered by cost centers to highlight specific areas of the organization.

Profitability by Project

This stacked bar chart shows your highest profitability projects and the amount of labor cost it took to deliver that profit.

  • Green bar - profit
  • Blue bar - cost of delivering the profit
  • Red bar - when a project is not profitable, the green bar turns red

Rate Realization by Project

Rate realization is the process of analyzing why your organization did not maximize revenue. For example, if you needed to write down shoddy work, or discount your standard rates to win the contract, this stacked bar chart shows it

The green bars are the rates you actually realized. The colored bars stacked on top reflect losses due to the following reasons:

  • Blue bar - discounted rates to sell the contract
  • Yellow bar - loss required to comply with contract terms. For example, you reached the cap on a Net to Exceed contract and consequently your average rate fell thereafter.
  • Red bar - had to discount or write-down labor

Project Analysis

The following four dashlets are meant to be viewed side-by-side. They are arranged such that you can find a project in one chart. Scanning left or right on a single project shows you four important metrics around its delivery.

Revenue and Profit by Project

This dashlet uses the same layout as the profitability dashlet introduced earlier in the article.

  • Green bar - profit
  • Blue bar - cost of delivering the profit
  • Red bar - when a project is not profitable, the green bar turns red

Performance to Budget (%)

Displays amount of budget consumed and budget overages.

  • Blue bar - percentage of budget used
  • Light gray bar - percentage of budget remaining
  • Red bar - percentage over budget

Margin by Project

View your project margins and how well they matched your margin targets.

  • Light Gray Bar - margin target for this project
  • Blue bar - current margin percent
  • Green bar - amount over margin

Rate Realization by Project

This is the same as the rate realization dashlet discussed earlier in this article, but it is now a stacked horizontal chart instead of vertical.
